Parish

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Waiting for me when I got back from Haiti was a letter from Sister Josephine from the Little Sisters of the Poor. This is what she wrote:

“We are grateful for the goodness you have bestowed upon the Residents of our Home. The support and assistance from St Thomas Aquinas Church to the Little Sisters of the Poor is indeed a sharing in the blessings we receive. Please extend our sincere appreciation to your parishioners for the gift totaling $8762.98 offered to St Joseph’s Home for the Aged. May God graciously reward their generosity.”

You may not realize this, but this parish community does have a reputation for being particularly generous, especially in charitable works and in supporting those who are working for the less fortunate and marginalized. In the Diocese’s response to our Annual Report, it is usually one of the things that gets specific mention by the Bishop -- the exemplary level of this parish’s charitable contributions throughout the year. Susie Phillips, our parish administrator, tells me that this was the single largest amount that the Little Sisters of the Poor have collected in their more-than-10 years of making annual appeals here at St Thomas. Of course, almsgiving is one of the three traditional “works” of Lent, along with prayer and fasting, and all of you have set a wonderful example. Thank you.

fr Brian, OP
